i will share music that aims to challenge and decolonize the listener’s understanding of hierarchies of power and the production of knowledge. These are artists whose very existence challenges categories of exclusion and concepts of ‘otherness’. They are (most often) hip hop tracks and albums that Jennifer Stoever-Akerman refers to as sonic archives of currents which questions polotics of how knowledge is produced, remembered and mobilized. (quote comes from Panel discussion What happens when hip hop is archived? which was part of Cornell Universities Born in the Bronx conference. Video links to the conference can be found on the resources page.)
